*A Unique National Park of India*

The Great Indian Desert, or the Thar desert is the 1.3 Million Square KM desert area between India and Pakistan. It's one of the most spectacular landscape comprising desert planes, dunes, scrubs and some of the most amazing desert wildlife.

Desert National Park (DNP) is the most unique and largest national park of India, ranging over 3162 sq.Km spread over Jaisalmer and Barmer districts of Rajasthan.

My visit to DNP was in the winter, when the temperature was as cold as 5 deg C. Summers here will witness a scotching 50 deg C too !!
Best time to visit the DNP is between Oct - Feb. The weather will be pleasant during the days and cold in the night.

DNP is a must for Bird watchers. One can see a huge variety of migratory birds, specially the raptors (birds of prey)., such as Laggar Falcon, Peregrine Falcons, huge numbers of Vultures, Eagles etc.,
However the major attraction of the park is the Great Indian Bustard. DNP is believe to be the last place of these elegant birds, which are on the verge of extinction.

DNP is a beautiful ecosystem, which ha many small human settlements inside the park who are peacefully coexisting with its denizens.

Visit DNP to witness the life inside a desert. There is a lot to learn from these deserts.

*Amazing and unforgettable experience*

This is the first time,I had visited sand desert of Thar ,in my life.
We started from Jaisalmer(about 40 Km) in afternoon at 3.30 PM.
After reaching there,we enjoyed Jeep safari, where special Jeep was taken inside the big dunes and the entire experience was very exciting and thrilling and bit challenging.
After Jeep safari,we enjoyed camel ride ,where the camel was taken in side deep desert and we could watch wonderful sun set in deserts of Jaisalmer.
Our tour was pre booked ,still they demanded tips which should not be a issue as the guides are definitely have hard and difficult life.
We finished our journey after watching evening cultural programme in a camp and followed by buffet dinner.
The entire evening was very pleasant and perhaps a best part of our visit.By 10PM we came back to our Hotel in Jaisalmer.
Another option is to stay in some camp in desert itself which we did not like to avail
Do not miss this desert safari tour.

*Birding Watching*

Great place to bird watch. I saw four Great Bustards which is an endangered species in India. Also saw Cream-Colored Courser, Red-Headed Vultures, Black-Crowned Lark-Sparrow and Great Spotted Eagle and others.

I also saw Desert Cat and Desert Fox and a Gray Mongoose.

There are great sights as well and plenty to see if one works at seeing them they aren't coming to you, you have to do some looking. So if you really enjoy outdoors you will love it here.

Beautiful, go and enjoy every moment

I visited Jaisalmer 3 times and everytime I come here, it's for Sam dunes only. Beautiful, nothing fancy, far from pomp and show of metros. Just go to desert, sit, relax and enjoy every moment. And, not to forget the sunrise and sunset in desert :). And for pricing, please make sure you have some idea about the camps(check rates on sites). For snacks, water bottle etc, better to carry from Jaisalmer, rather buy some unknown branded stuffs from locals.

*Golden views and great wildlife*

DNP is a place like nowhere else. The scenery is mesmerizing with golden hues all around. The park has been fenced by the forest department and separated from the numerous fields that surround it.The best way to experience it would be to go around the fence with a local guide. The park offers easy sighting of the numerous raptors that are found here. But the main attraction is the Great Indian Bustard. I was lucky to see two of them as sighting is rare. I found a local guide by the name of Urus Khan who is a local and lives near the park. He knows the way around and is really passionate about the wildlife. He can be reached on 9461545223 or 952165260. A must visit site for nature lovers

*Sam dunes are mesmerizing*

Sam dunes are a must visit (they are better than Khuri village imo). Dont pre book anything you can get the best rates. I got 100 for a 15 minute camel ride and 800 for a 20 minute jeep ride on dunes ( for 7 people). Touts in Jaisalmer will try to offer a package of 500 rs and include a dinner and folk dance at a nearby camp site (food is bad at best and dance is passable). Suggest if you want to see an actual folk dance, drive down to one of the villages and dine with them. They will be mor than happy to let you enter their houses, share their customs with you and cook you a simple traditional marwadi meal. You can leave whatever you think was worth to them instead of falling in the touristy trap of camp sites (PS:its cold, uncomfortable and full of drunk people who come to see the dances and shower money)

Experiencing Thar desert

Camel safari in the desert national park was an awesome experience. Initially we were totally confused to choose between Khuri and Sam as we wanted to experience the best possible within a day. We drove to Khuri village from Jaisalmer around 2PM and explored the village. As the safari packages were high priced we engaged a camel man (Pumaram) from the village to visit the dunes. The young chap was very hospitable and friendly. He charged just Rs 250 per person. He patiently taught our children to ride the camel (they even learnt to gallop) On the dunes we enjoyed sunset and danced to the tunes of traditional rajasthani music played by a folk artist. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to go on a long safari, so taking the advice of the camel man we returned to the national park early in the morning and spotted wildlife... desert eagle, black buck and smaller mammals and enjoyed sunrise.
Overall we had a fulfilling experience. Backpackers can very well stay with the village folks who are very hospitable and get a real flavour of the rural life in the area.

Must Visit

I was really surprised to see how green a desert national park was. Entry to the park was Rs 50 per person (for Indian tourists) and Rs 200 for the car parking. You can hire a camel cart for Rs 800 and take a 2 hour drive through the park. As the weather was good, we chose to walk instead. The park is home to the Great Indian Bustard but it is difficult to spot. We narrowly missed it and we know this because there were footprints next to ours on the path when we retraced our steps on our way back :) There were plenty of other birds though. Camping is also allowed in the park for a certain fee.

"Amazing Experiences!!! Fun filled, Very close to nature"
I'll rate this desert experience is the best in the entire Jaisalmer Trip. lovely Sam Sand Dunes...tumble in sand, Camel ride, jeep safari, cultural programmes, mouth watering food...be close to nature Tent stay, witness sunset and count twinkling stars...what not??? It must be around 40 kms from main town...you need a vehicle to reach there. On the way you can cover Kuldhara deserted village and try paragliding on the way back. My personal experience, book online a good desert stay near sam dunes with evening dance shows ( most of the camps are accessible by road)...reach there, on spot only you can directly negotiate and fix camel rides...up to sunset point or want to cover more distance, try it...get dropped to the start place...few hundreds is enough. I vote for direct booking either paragliding or jeep safari...for night, light winter clothing required during winters...enjoy the real fun.

The Sahara of Jaisalmer

BEFORE you go out into the desert, make sure you have a reputable tour operator to take you. There are many operators who will take you to nearby sand dunes and many other tourists. Some of the shady operators will leave rubbish behind in the dunes which sadly detracts from the natural beauty.

I went with a long-time operator "Trotters Independent" who operate just outside of the Jaisalmer fort entrance.

The price was marginally higher than the price of other operators but what a major difference. I was taken to a more remote location (further afield than other operators) and for a short time, I was immersed into a "Laurence of Arabia" setting.

Make sure that you plan for the time of the outing and, dress accordingly. In the heat of the summer, the sun can almost peel the skin from your body and then you'll freeze at night (unless the operator has a good supply of blankets).
